Impact of Poor Oral Hygiene?

Posted on 10/24/2022 by Dr. Christianne Lee
Impact of Poor Oral Hygiene?Everyone wants a winning smile and healthy gums. However, people do not understand the importance of good oral hygiene. They believe that brushing is enough to keep their teeth healthy. Ensuring strong and healthy teeth involves more than just brushing. With regular dental visits, flossing, and brushing, you will maintain proper teeth functioning. But without proper oral hygiene, you will be at high risk of dental issues such as the ones below.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the most common dental issue that results from poor oral hygiene. It occurs when you consume food high in sugar and starch. When you ignore brushing and flossing, bacteria in the mouth will feed on the sugar and starch, forming plaque. The plaque will then release an acid that will attack the tooth enamel, causing tiny openings. This helps bacteria and acids to reach the dentin, thus, causing decay.

Gum Diseases

Another dental concern that occurs due to poor oral hygiene is gum disease. It is a bacterial infection that results from plaque buildup. When your gums are red, swollen, or bleed easily, chances are you have gum disease. Poor brushing and flossing techniques are the main contributors to gum diseases. In this case, it is best to brush and floss at least twice a day.

Receding Gums

Receding gums is a serious dental problem since it can lead to teeth loss. This condition exposes the tooth's roots, making them susceptible to damage. Skipping brushing can lead to plaque buildup, which in turn results in gum diseases. In the advanced stage, gum disease can lead to receding gums. In this case, incorporating your daily routine and regular dental checkups can help to prevent dental issues.

Dental issues can lower your confidence and impact the quality of your life. If you notice any signs of dental problems, contact us, and our professional will take care of your oral needs.
