Many Steps Go into Your Dental Checkup

It is recommended that you take care of your mouth and teeth by having regular dental checkups, but you may wonder what happens at your checkup after you walk through the door of our office. There are many steps to a dental checkup so that we can be sure that your teeth are healthy and dental issues are prevented. Many people assume that we clean your teeth, which is true, but there is a lot more that goes into a checkup aside from the teeth cleaning portion.

Components of a Dental Checkup

A major component of a dental checkup is teeth cleaning, but a lot goes into the cleaning itself. The dental cleaning is typically performed by one of our dental assistances. There are various tools used in dental cleaning, including removing or scraping tartar and plaque from the teeth and the gums. The teeth are then polished. Next, we may order dental x-rays to further diagnose any dental concerns brought forward by the assistant or that we notice during a more detailed exam. After the cleaning, we will complete a more detailed checkup, including the review of any x-rays. We carefully examine the gums, palate, throat, and neck. We will then discuss any preventative care necessary and discuss your overall oral health.
